Kuching Man Arrested for Using Fake Vehicle Number to Avoid Bank Towing

KUCHING, 12 December 2025 – A local man in his 30s was apprehended yesterday for deliberately altering his vehicle registration number to avoid having his vehicle towed by a bank. The incident occurred at approximately 10:50 am on Jalan Tun Jugah, Kuching, during a routine patrol by members of the Sarawak JSPT IPK.

Officers conducting the patrol noticed a vehicle whose registration number did not match any records in the MYJPJ system. Upon stopping the vehicle and conducting a thorough inspection, authorities discovered that the registration number had been tampered with. The driver was immediately taken into custody and brought to the Kuching IPD Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division for further questioning and investigation.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 108(e) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Police have urged the public to strictly comply with road laws, emphasizing that the use of false vehicle registration numbers is a serious offence. Violators may face a minimum fine of RM5,000 and a maximum of RM20,000, or imprisonment for up to five years, or both.

In a statement, the Kuching police reminded motorists that tampering with vehicle registration details not only violates the law but also poses safety and security risks on the road. They called on the community to report suspicious vehicles and cooperate with authorities to maintain road safety and law compliance.

This incident serves as a stern reminder to road users in Kuching and across Sarawak to adhere to legal vehicle registration procedures. The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing and further actions will be taken against anyone found guilty of similar offences.
