Lingga’s Growth Requires Mindset Shift Alongside Infrastructure Development

LINGGA – The transformation of Lingga into a full district must be accompanied by a change in community mindset to ensure that physical development projects deliver maximum benefits, said Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.

Delivering his message through Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, at the Opening Ceremony of the Lingga Regatta 2025, Abang Zohari stressed that readiness to embrace change is crucial for the local population to fully capitalise on new opportunities.

He pointed to strategic projects such as the Lingga Bridge, the Lingga Embankment, and other public facilities as part of the Sarawak Government’s efforts to stimulate economic growth and improve quality of life.

“The upgrading of Lingga as a full district requires the community to be prepared to adjust their mentality to be more open to the new opportunities created by this development,” he said.

The Premier added that development is not only about infrastructure but also about shaping attitudes and encouraging communities to seize economic opportunities and investments.

He noted that the Lingga Bridge will enhance connectivity and economic access, while the riverbank development is expected to become a tourism attraction, generating jobs and boosting local businesses.

Large-scale events such as the Lingga Regatta were also highlighted as effective platforms to introduce the district to wider audiences, supporting Sarawak’s tourism agenda under Sarawak Maju 2030.

The third edition of the regatta saw 41 teams competing, including international participants from Brunei Darussalam. Of these, 29 teams contested the Raja Sungai category, while 12 teams joined the Battle of Titans.

Lingga State Assemblyman Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor announced that the Raja Sungai champion would receive RM15,000 and a trophy, while the Battle of Titans winner would take home RM30,000.

She expressed hope that the regatta would remain a symbol of unity, sportsmanship, and community identity, while further boosting Lingga’s profile as a tourism destination.

The event was attended by Batang Lupar MP Shafizan Kepli, Simunjan ADUN Awla Dris, and Sri Aman Division Resident Mahra Salleh, reflecting strong support for Lingga’s development agenda.
