PENANG – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim this morning attended the launch of a book titled “The Man Who Could Move Mountains – Reflections on the Social Activism of S.M. Mohamed Idris”, organised by the Penang Consumers Association (CAP).
The publication pays tribute to the late S.M. Mohamed Idris, affectionately known as Uncle Idris, a Penang-born activist who earned respect both nationally and internationally for his tireless work in consumer rights and social justice.
Anwar, who has known Idris since the 1970s, described him as a figure of integrity and wisdom. Over more than five decades of activism, Idris was recognised for his polite yet firm approach, principled stance, and ability to engage across social classes and generations on policy matters.
The Prime Minister said the book serves not only as a record of Idris’s contributions to civil society but also as a repository of values such as moral courage, social concern and commitment to justice. He emphasised that these qualities remain essential in guiding future generations of activists.
“The publication of this book not only records the great contribution of the late to the civil society movement, but also becomes a treasure trove of knowledge that elevates the values of moral courage, social concern and commitment to justice,” Anwar noted.
He urged the activist community to continue acting as agents of change, pursuing civic activism rooted in humanity, and to use the book as a reference and inspiration for ongoing struggles in social justice.
The ceremony highlighted the enduring impact of Idris’s work, which spanned more than 55 years and influenced both national policies and international advocacy.
CAP’s initiative in publishing the book reflects the organisation’s commitment to preserving his legacy and ensuring his values remain relevant in today’s society.
