DPM Channels RM50,000 to Surau Mahmudi, Supports Friday Prayer Appeal

KUCHING – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof has demonstrated his concern for the needs of worshippers by presenting a RM50,000 contribution under the People-Friendly Project (PMR) to Surau Mahmudi in Jalan Matang.

The cheque was handed over to Surau Mahmudi Chairman Bolhassan Makrof during a brief ceremony held after the Maghrib prayer on Monday.

The contribution is expected to ease financial constraints faced by the surau, which had already utilised its previous allocation for upgrading works.

Bolhassan explained that while the surau’s interior and exterior had been refurbished, including improvements to the fence and tower, the funds had been exhausted, leaving them unable to purchase prayer mats.

We kept whispering with the DPM to ask for funding assistance, so he came today to deliver the funds,” he said.

In addition to the financial support, Bolhassan appealed to the Deputy Prime Minister to assist Surau Mahmudi in obtaining permission to hold Friday prayers.

He noted that the Gita area currently has only one mosque, the At-Taqwa Mosque on Jalan Pinang Jawa, which is often overcrowded. The nearest alternative, Darul Husni Mosque in Taman Hussein, is located at a considerable distance.

Bolhassan expressed hope that with the DPM’s backing, Surau Mahmudi would be granted approval to host Friday prayers next year, following five previous applications.

He emphasised the urgency of the matter, pointing out that the surau can accommodate up to 400 devotees, making it a practical solution for the growing needs of the local Muslim community.

The contribution and appeal highlight the importance of expanding worship facilities in Kuching’s suburban areas, ensuring that residents have accessible and comfortable spaces for religious observance.

The initiative also reflects the government’s commitment to supporting community welfare and strengthening religious infrastructure.
