Driver Dies After Car Crashes Into Guardrail in Lundu

LUNDU: A quiet early morning drive ended in tragedy when a man lost his life after the car he was driving skidded and crashed into a guardrail along Jalan Lundu–Sematan on Friday.

The fatal accident happened at about 6.15am, a time when traffic is usually light and visibility is generally clear. The victim was travelling alone from Kampung Sungai Limo towards Roxy Sematan when the incident occurred. The sudden loss of control shocked residents and road users who later came across the damaged vehicle at the scene.

Lundu District Police Chief Superintendent Sudirman Kram said initial investigations found that the driver is believed to have lost control of the car upon reaching Kilometre 14 of Jalan Lundu–Sematan. The vehicle then crashed heavily into the guardrail by the roadside.

“As a result of the collision, the driver sustained serious injuries,” he said when contacted. The victim was quickly rushed to Lundu Hospital by emergency responders in an effort to save his life. Despite medical treatment, the man was later confirmed dead by the hospital’s medical officer.

Police have classified the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers reckless or dangerous driving causing death. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether road conditions, vehicle condition, speed, or other factors played a role.

The crash once again highlights the dangers faced by motorists, even on familiar roads. Jalan Lundu–Sematan is frequently used by locals and visitors, especially in the early hours by those heading to work or nearby towns. Accidents along this stretch have often been linked to speeding, driver fatigue, and loss of control.

Superintendent Sudirman advised all road users to remain cautious at all times. He reminded drivers to obey traffic laws, maintain safe speeds, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before starting a journey. Extra care is needed during early morning hours when alertness may be lower.

The police also urged witnesses or anyone with information related to the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation. As the community mourns another life lost on the road, authorities continue to stress that road safety is a shared responsibility.
