KUCHING – Batu Kawa Riverbank Park came alive on Saturday evening as residents gathered for the Light Up Christmas Tree 2025 programme, marking a meaningful festive moment for the local community. The event, held on December 21, reflected Sarawak’s long-standing tradition of unity and respect among people of different cultures and beliefs.
The programme was officiated by Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, YB Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian. His presence added significance to the celebration, which was organised by Majlis Perbandaran Padawan (MPP) as part of its community engagement efforts. Also present were MPP Chairman Cr Tan Kai and Municipal Secretary Ir. Ts. Goh Thiam Ho, together with MPP councillors and staff.
The main highlight of the evening was the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree decorations at the Batu Kawa Riverbank Park. As the lights came on, the park drew warm reactions from those gathered, creating a festive atmosphere by the riverbank. This was followed by Christmas carolling performed by MPP staff, which further added to the sense of celebration and community spirit among the crowd.
Residents from the surrounding areas attended the event, including families, senior citizens and young people. The gathering provided an opportunity for neighbours to meet, interact and celebrate together in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Although Christmas is observed by the Christian community, the programme was open to all members of the public, reflecting Sarawak’s inclusive approach to festive celebrations.
Organisers said the programme was held not only to mark the Christmas season, but also to strengthen unity and harmony within the local community. Sarawak’s multicultural and multi-religious society has long been recognised for its peaceful coexistence, and events such as this continue to reinforce mutual understanding and respect among people of different backgrounds.
The Light Up Christmas Tree Programme also highlighted the role of local authorities in bringing communities together through meaningful public events. By choosing a popular public space like Batu Kawa Riverbank Park, the organisers ensured that the celebration was accessible and welcoming to everyone.
As the evening came to a close, the festive setting left many visitors in good spirits. The celebration served as a reminder that beyond decorations and carols, the true value of such programmes lies in building stronger community ties and encouraging people to celebrate together in harmony. With positive response from the public, the Batu Kawa Christmas tree lighting is expected to remain a cherished year-end tradition for the area.
