SIMUNJAN: The Federation of Sarawak Women’s Associations (PPWS) Simunjan has been encouraged to focus on developing a special product or signature offering to enhance competitiveness and achieve long-term self-reliance.
Batang Sadong Member of Parliament, Rodiyah Sapiee, stressed that the initiative would empower the 27 women’s associations across the district and help each village establish its own economic identity.
“Every village must have its own uniqueness, whether in food, traditional cakes, bakery products, handicrafts, or specialized services. If each group focuses on a quality and consistent product, PPWS Simunjan can gain recognition not only locally but also on a wider scale,” she said during the PPWS Family Day Programme at the Simunjan District PPWS Building today.
Rodiyah added that this effort would help make PPWS more organised, competitive, and independent over time. “I am committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen economic networks among PPWS Simunjan families,” she said.
Highlighting the PPWS Simunjan Bakery initiative and previous support in providing equipment, Rodiyah emphasised the importance of consistency, skill development, product quality, and expanding marketing networks. She cited a recent keropok lekor-making course held on December 21 by PPWS Kampung Sabun/Sedilo in collaboration with the Sarawak Centre for Technological Excellence (CENTEXS), noting its potential to empower women’s economy at the village level.
Rodiyah also reminded members of several upcoming initiatives by the Sarawak and Federal Governments that women could access by 2026. These include the Sarawak Women’s Empowerment Capital Grants of up to RM5,000 for business equipment purchases for B40 women entrepreneurs, and the Sarawak Women’s Household Head Assistance (KIRWaS) one-off payment of RM1,000 for single mothers in low-income categories. At the federal level, programs under the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) offer leadership grants and business development funds for women.
She further highlighted that events like the PPWS Family Day serve as platforms to strengthen friendships, exchange ideas, and define the association’s direction. “Strong relationships among women form the foundation of a resilient and prosperous community,” she said.
Through focused efforts, skill-building, and government support, PPWS Simunjan is poised to grow its economic influence while fostering unity among its members.
