Sarawak Governor Pays Tribute to Late Economist Dato’ Dr Madeline Berma

KUCHING, 1 January – His Excellency Tun Pehin Sri Dr Haji Wan Junaidi bin Tuanku Jaafar, the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, together with his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, paid their final respects today to the late Dato’ Dr Madeline Berma, a distinguished Sarawak-born economist and academic.

Dato’ Dr Madeline Berma passed away on 30 December at the age of 67 at her residence in Bandar Baru Bangi, Selangor.

Her remains were brought back to her family home in Kampung Siol Kandis, Petra Jaya, where relatives and friends gathered to mourn her loss.

The arrival of Tun Pehin Sri and Toh Puan was met with solemnity and grief by family members. During the visit, they spent time with the heirs, offering personal condolences and words of comfort.

Tun Pehin Sri recalled that he had known the late economist’s father during their time, serving together in the Police Department, adding a personal connection to the family.

He described her passing as a significant loss not only for Sarawak but for Malaysia as a whole. “Her contributions in the field of economic development and advocacy for marginalised communities have greatly helped in the formation of important policies. Sarawak has lost a very dedicated gem,” he said.

Dato’ Dr Madeline Berma was widely respected for her academic work and her commitment to social and economic issues, particularly in championing the rights of disadvantaged groups.

Her research and policy input played a vital role in shaping development strategies at both state and national levels.

Tun Pehin Sri and Toh Puan also offered prayers for the bereaved family, wishing them strength, fortitude, and peace during this difficult time.

Their presence reflected the state leadership’s recognition of her immense contributions and the respect she commanded across society.

The tribute underscored the impact of Dato’ Dr Madeline Berma’s lifelong dedication to education, economic empowerment, and community development, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.
