Sarawak Receives Invitation from SUKMA 2026, Sedia Ngetan Holds Championship Title in Selangor

The symbolic handover of the SUKMA flag took place during a working visit by Selangor’s organising committee to Kuching, marking the beginning of preparations for the state’s athletes.

Sarawak enters the competition as the reigning champion, having secured the overall title at SUKMA 2024 in Sarawak with a record-breaking haul of 76 gold medals, alongside 55 silvers and 70 bronzes. That victory ended a 30-year wait for the state to reclaim the top spot in the national multi-sport event.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, emphasised that defending the crown outside Sarawak would be a significant challenge.

He noted that Selangor has a strong track record in SUKMA history, but expressed confidence that Sarawak’s contingent would be well-prepared.

“Besides Selangor as the host, Sarawak is also expected to be among the states sending the largest contingent, and we will ensure that all preparations are done well to retain the championship title,” he said.

The minister highlighted that early planning was essential to maintain Sarawak’s momentum, especially given the scale of the upcoming event. SUKMA 2026 will feature 37 sports and 474 events, spread across nine districts in Selangor.

Meanwhile, Selangor’s Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman, Mohd Najwan Halimi, confirmed that the opening ceremony will break tradition by being staged at the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) rather than a stadium.

“The opening ceremony of SUKMA 2026 will be held at the Sepang International Circuit and not at the stadium. Therefore, this is the first time SUKMA is held outside the stadium and is expected to provide a different and new experience for athletes and spectators,” he explained.

Najwan added that the decision was inspired by international sporting events such as the Paris Olympics, which staged its opening ceremony along the Seine River. He said the move was designed to create a fresh atmosphere for the biennial competition.

Selangor’s preparations are reportedly on track, with more than 80 per cent of sports facilities already refurbished. The remaining upgrades are expected to be completed by April, ensuring readiness ahead of the Games.

The closing ceremony will take place at the Petaling Jaya City Council Stadium (MBPJ), while Para SUKMA is scheduled from 5 to 14 September 2026.

With Sarawak determined to defend its title and Selangor promising a modernised hosting experience, SUKMA 2026 is set to deliver one of the most vibrant editions in the competition’s history.
