Kuching, Jan 9, 2026 – Residents in Kuching and surrounding areas experienced sudden water supply interruptions and traffic disruptions following a pipe burst that caused a road shoulder embankment failure near Jalan Haji Baki and Jalan Batu Kitang.
According to Sarawak Water, the incident occurred when a landslide along Jalan Batu Kitang near the Haji Baki traffic light caused excessive stress on a 1050mm Mild Steel Cement-Lined (MSCL) pumping mains pipeline. The ground movement displaced the pipeline, leading to its rupture and a subsequent collapse of the nearby road shoulder.
The pipe burst released a large volume of water into the surrounding soil, accelerating erosion and weakening the embankment beneath the road. Authorities have warned that the unstable ground poses safety risks, and access in the affected area is being strictly controlled.
The incident has also affected water supply across several areas, including Kuching City Center, Petra Jaya, Kota Samarahan, and Padawan. Low water pressure and unscheduled interruptions have been reported as a result of reduced inflow to service reservoirs.
In response, Sarawak Water activated its emergency protocols, closely monitoring reservoir levels and system pressure. Isolation valves were immediately operated to control leakage, while emergency repair works will commence as soon as safety assessments are completed. System reconfiguration and strategic water diversions have been implemented to stabilise supply during the restoration process.
Sarawak Water is coordinating closely with technical agencies and relevant authorities to ensure repair and reinstatement works are carried out safely and effectively. The utility expressed regret for the inconvenience and urged the public to remain patient while restoration efforts continue. Further updates will be provided as progress is made.
