Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run Celebrates City Spirit and History

Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run Celebrates City Spirit and History

KUCHING: The Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run has returned stronger in its third edition, proving that it is no longer just a sporting event, but a meaningful celebration of Kuching’s identity, history and people. Organised by the City Jogger’s Club (CJC), the run continues to grow in scale and importance, drawing attention to Kuching as a city rich in heritage, culture and community spirit.

From its early beginnings, the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run was planned with a clear purpose. The organisers wanted to promote the beauty of Kuching through an immersive running experience that allows participants to truly see and feel the city. Unlike ordinary races, this event offers a route that passes through some of Kuching’s most iconic landmarks and heritage areas, including old streets, historic buildings, colourful murals, scenic riverbanks and green spaces. As runners move along the course, they are greeted by changing city views and the calm beauty of the early morning sunrise, creating a memorable journey through the heart of Kuching.

Each kilometre of the race tells a story. It reflects how Kuching has grown over the years while still holding on to its roots. Heritage buildings stand alongside modern developments, showing how tradition and progress can exist together. This concept strongly reflects the vision of the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Sarawak, under its motto “Sarawak: More to Discover”. Through the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run, local and international runners are encouraged to see Kuching not just as a place to compete, but as a city full of character, history and living stories.

For Sarawakians, the event carries a deeper meaning. Living in Kuching every day, many may overlook the richness of the city around them. This run serves as a reminder of how special Kuching truly is. It highlights the city’s cleanliness, liveability and strong sense of community, qualities that have earned Kuching recognition as one of the most comfortable cities to live in Malaysia. More importantly, the event helps to renew pride among anak Sarawak, reminding them why Kuching is a place worth celebrating and protecting.

The City Jogger’s Club, the organiser behind the event, is one of the longest-established jogging clubs in Kuching and is now proudly marking its 12th year. The club was formed to promote healthy living, inclusivity and community bonding through running. Over the years, CJC has built a strong grassroots running community and has consistently organised running activities and charity events. These efforts have contributed not only to sports development but also to social well-being within the city.

Strong support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts Sarawak has further strengthened the event. The Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run was officially announced by Yang Berhormat Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah during a press conference last year. His presence as Guest of Honour at the prize-giving ceremony on race day, held on July 27, 2025, reflected the ministry’s commitment to supporting sports tourism and community-based events in Sarawak.

The growing international interest in the event is another positive sign. The 2025 edition attracted participants from 22 countries, placing Kuching firmly on the map as an emerging sports tourism destination. The event also took place alongside the Kuching Food Festival, adding a festive atmosphere and giving runners the opportunity to enjoy local food and culture after the race. This combination of sports and culture created a complete experience for visitors and locals alike.

Adding to its importance, the Kuching Half Marathon Heritage Run is officially listed in the annual calendar of Majlis Bandaraya Kuching Selatan (MBKS). This recognition confirms the event’s role as a key sporting and tourism activity for the city, with potential to continue growing in the years ahead.

As participants cross the finish line, they carry more than just a race medal. They leave with a deeper understanding of Kuching’s legacy and a renewed appreciation for the city’s people and heritage. With every step taken, the run proves why Sarawak truly offers more to discover.
