MBKS Leaders Spread Festive Cheer at Kenyalang Market

KUCHING – The spirit of Chinese New Year was brought to life at Kenyalang Market and Kenyalang Food Centre as community leaders joined residents in a festive walkabout.

Dato Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South City Council, led the event alongside councillors Albert Tay, Judy Kho, Jong Jia Chee and Stephanie Evelyn Inte, accompanied by members of the Child Council.

Together, they gave hawkers and the general public traditional Chinese New Year couplets (Òüge), which represent prosperity and good fortune for the coming year.

In addition to spreading festive cheer, the walkabout aimed to improve community relations. To promote participation across generations, posters advertising forthcoming competitions under the Child-Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) and Ageing Program were distributed.

Among the activities that were highlighted were:

  • Two Ages, One Runway: A Generation Fashion Show – an event designed to showcase creativity while bridging the gap between younger and older generations.
  • My Grandparents, My Heart, My Heroes (Poster Competition) – a contest celebrating family bonds and the role of grandparents in nurturing values and traditions.

By encouraging inclusivity and involvement, these programs hope to keep young and old involved in Kuching’s community life.

The council’s larger commitment to creating a cohesive and dynamic city is reflected in the joyous walkabout.

Kuching keeps fostering harmony and shared experiences among its citizens by fusing cultural customs with contemporary community initiatives.

Kuching’s Chinese New Year celebrations are renowned for their vibrant atmosphere, with markets and food centres serving as hubs for social gatherings.

While the promotion of intergenerational activities emphasised the value of community solidarity, the distribution of couplets at Kenyalang Market added to the festive atmosphere.

The occasion highlighted the council’s goal of building a city that celebrates unity, diversity, and inclusivity.

Initiatives like these are anticipated to be crucial in bolstering social ties and guaranteeing that celebrations continue to serve as a forum for unity as Kuching south city develops.
