MIRI – A total of 22 organisations and institutions in the Pujut area have received allocations totaling RM70,000 under the Small Rural Projects (MRP) scheme.
The announcement was made by Pujut State Assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang, who also serves as Mayor of Miri City, during a grant presentation ceremony on Saturday.
Recipients included community associations, educational institutions, religious bodies, sports clubs, and welfare organisations across Pujut and the wider Miri Division.
Adam Yii expressed hope that the funds would be used effectively to support community activities, welfare initiatives, and local development, strengthening unity and well-being in the constituency.
During his address, Adam Yii also presented the 2025 MRP implementation report, which recorded financial assistance to 381 organisations covering 201 activities across religious, educational, and community fields.
Of these, 17 were religious organisations, 15 were schools, and 148 were non-governmental and community associations.
Beyond the allocations, Adam Yii addressed recent flooding issues affecting parts of Miri. He explained that the problem arises from multiple factors, including unusually heavy rainfall, limited drainage capacity, blocked drains, and high tides in low-lying areas.
He noted that certain areas of Miri experience high tides even without rain, particularly zones near rivers. While natural factors like rain and tides cannot be controlled, Adam Yii emphasised that the maintenance of drainage systems is critical and must be prioritised by authorities.
To tackle the issue, he has instructed the Miri City Council’s Engineering Department to ensure that drainage systems are regularly cleaned and kept fully operational to reduce the risk of flash floods.
The combination of community development through MRP allocations and flood mitigation efforts reflects the state government’s commitment to improving both social welfare and infrastructure resilience in Miri.
