Community Walkabout in Bukit Tuan Strengthens Safety and Unity

Community Walkabout in Bukit Tuan Strengthens Safety and Unity

KUCHING: A strong spirit of cooperation and neighbourly care was clearly seen during a recent community walkabout held at Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) Bukit Tuan and Kejiranan Mesra (KJM) Bukit Tuan. The programme reflected close collaboration among community organisations, local authorities and enforcement agencies in promoting neighbourhood well-being, safety and effective communication with residents.

The walkabout received encouraging support from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and Dewan Bandaraya Kuching Utara (DBKU), highlighting a united approach to addressing local issues at the ground level. PDRM participation was led by ASP Alkarnia anak Nyohid, Ketua Unit Rondaan Bermotosikal (URB) Kuching, together with officers from the Central Police Station, patrol units and the traffic police. Their involvement focused on crime prevention awareness, traffic safety and maintaining public order within the residential area.

DBKU was represented by Encik Rudzaimeir Malek, Deputy Director, along with officers from various departments including engineering, infrastructure maintenance, mechanical and electrical services, enforcement, security and public relations. The presence of officers from multiple divisions allowed for immediate on-site inspection and assessment of infrastructure-related issues raised by residents during the walkabout. Matters such as drainage conditions, road damage, street lighting and general safety concerns were directly observed and discussed.

The programme was facilitated by Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch Youth Chairman, Councillor Nicholas Wung Duk Ying, together with his team. Throughout the walkabout, Councillor Nicholas actively engaged with residents, listening to their feedback and highlighting key concerns affecting daily life in the neighbourhood. He also played an important role in bridging communication between residents and DBKU officers to ensure issues raised could be followed up effectively.

During the programme, PDRM officers introduced residents to the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application as a tool to enhance community-based crime reporting. Officers also took action against illegal signages in the area and provided practical advice on crime prevention and traffic safety. Residents welcomed the presence of the authorities and took part in open and constructive discussions, helping to build mutual understanding and trust.

Despite brisk rain towards the end of the programme, the walkabout continued until its completion. This demonstrated the strong commitment shown by all parties involved to ensure the programme achieved its objectives.

Kapitan Fong Yee Chee of JKKK Jalan Rock/Bampfylde expressed her appreciation to PDRM, DBKU, Councillor Nicholas Wung Duk Ying and his team, as well as all participating officers. She also shared plans to organise similar walkabout programmes in other areas under her JKKK in the future, with the aim of further strengthening community engagement and cooperation for a safer and more caring neighbourhood.
