KUCHING – The 2026 Kenyalang Chinese New Year Market in Kuching kicked off tonight, ushering one of the city’s most exciting celebrations. MBKS health and pandemics committee chairman Dr Kho Teck Wan said the programme would be held at the market which will host a variety of Chinese New Year celebrations such as open house, mingling with local shops, etc.
The Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian has graced the occasion as Guest of Honour to officiate the launch. His visit continued a tradition of the city’s cultural calendar as this time each year when he appeared.
Delegates from different ethnic groups also came to attend the ceremony as well, expressing inclusiveness and solidarity brought by the market. Their involvement was a clear demonstration of the significant role cultural diversity plays in Sarawak’s celebration of festivities, and services both local food truck players that keep Borneo’s economy pulsating.
Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng thanked the organizing committee for their hard work and effort in making the event equally a successful one, adding that they were “dedicated and meticulous planners.” He said the market serves a purpose larger than helping small businesses settle into communities, it also offers people from all walks of life an opportunity to come together and celebrate.
Kenyalang Lunar New Year Market is known for its chirping atmosphere, with stalls selling goods, local delicacies, decorations and cultural shows. Guests will be treated to a vibrant display of Sarawak’s rich heritage combined with contemporary commerce and traditions.
This year’s market is likely to achieve excellent crowds, with both locals and travellers keen to experience the festive atmosphere and make purchases in preparation for Lunar New Year. Thus, the traders at this location have already started to exhibit their products in the public with lanterns and banners being put up along Kenyalang road which provides a lively ambience.
