JAKARTA – Physical, power and digital connectivity have been outlined as the basic building block of regional development in Borneo with Sarawak identified as a crucial port of call to intensify Indonesia’s cooperation with its neighbouring countries.
Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg told the Indonesia Economic Summit 2026 that Sarawak continues to invest in infrastructure, utilities and telecommunications. He said the state was developing transport and logistics chains by connecting land transport systems, expanding international airports and improving shipping networks.
He highlighted the strategic asset that is Kijing International Port in West Kalimantan. “Our neighbouring country already has the biggest port in Kalimantan, which is Kijing International Port that serves as a regional deep sea gateway for Kalimantan and can also play a significant role in our ports operations.
Cumulatively, the building of the port will bring,” what he described to be a more efficient seaport opportunity and long distance connections efficiency towards East Asia, Middle East as well as Europe”.
The port is the building block of a more efficient long-haul shipping chain to make Borneo easily accessible to the world’s major markets, and it will also be part of Sarawak s networks, he added.
Air Links was also emphasised as an important aspect of the regional integration. The Premier also mentioned the resumption of direct flights between Kuching and Pontianak, although it does not but ease travel but promotes trade, tourism, educations and cultural exchange. He said that is why AirBorneo was formed by Sarawak to expand air connectivity and connect the island to international destinations.
On energy, the Premier laid emphasis on Borneo’s abundant renewable prospects and there is now a rising interest from around the world. Early this month, he disclosed that Sarawak is in close communication with Indonesia on joint hydroelectric development projects in North Kalimantan.
“Once that positive energy gets started it can spread out across the whole island. This collaboration shows another way in which Borneo is working together to advance clean energy through real cross border sharing,” he added.
In the future, the Prime Minister added that by 2030, economic growth throughout Borneo would be boosted with the establishment of Indonesia’s new capital city in Borneo. He stated the projects will not only enhance infrastructure but also offer investment, innovation and sustainable development opportunities.
The Premier was accompanied at the IES 2026 by Sarawak Government Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Sarawak Government Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr. Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel and other senior state government officials.
Their participation reaffirms Sarawak’s commitment and support to push for further regional cooperation to ensure Borneo connectivity and clean energy initiatives materialise for the people of Borneo.
