LIMBANG – The Sarawak Government has reaffirmed its focus on planned and responsive infrastructure development, with projects aimed at improving daily life and strengthening tourism potential, especially in rural districts.
Abdul Rahman Ismail, Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Sarawak and Bukit Kota assemblyman, highlighted the progress of the Rangau River Embankment Project.
Approved at a cost of RM20 million and implemented under the Limbang District Council, the project has surpassed 90 percent physical completion and is on track to finish ahead of schedule.
Initially set for completion on April 30, the embankment is now expected to be ready by February. Abdul Rahman said the project improves the surrounding landscape while opening space for tourism-related activities.
“The Rangau River Embankment Project not only adds value in terms of landscape beauty but can also be a tourist attraction that boosts the local economy. We are also very grateful to the Sarawak Premier for approving this project for the sake of development and progress in Limbang,” he said during a site visit on Friday.
Earlier, he visited Sungai Kaban Park with officers from the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) and the Limbang District Council to address recurring flash floods. DID agreed to carry out dredging works to clear clogged drains and maintain the drainage flow up to Sungai Limbang.
The maintenance works will take place three times a year under DID’s operating schedule to keep the drainage system functioning properly.
Abdul Rahman stressed the need for continuous monitoring of basic infrastructure, including roads and drainage, to reduce flood risks. He also urged residents to report problems quickly so authorities respond without delay.
The visit was attended by Limbang District Council Secretary Michelle Hildalyne Jering Anthony Luta and Council Chairman Sufian Mohat, reflecting close coordination between elected representatives and local authorities.
The embankment project and flood mitigation measures form part of Sarawak’s broader plan to strengthen rural resilience, improve infrastructure standards and create new economic opportunities through tourism.
