Sarawak CNY 2026 Open House Draws Thousands in Kuching

Sarawak CNY 2026 Open House Draws Thousands in Kuching

KUCHING: A festive and heartwarming atmosphere filled the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching early Tuesday morning as thousands gathered for the Sarawak-level Chinese New Year Celebration 2026. From as early as 9am, people of all ages and backgrounds arrived with smiles, hope, and renewed spirit, reflecting the strong sense of unity that Sarawak is known for.

The state-level celebration was graced by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, and his wife Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi. Their presence highlighted the importance of the celebration, not only as a festive occasion but as a meaningful platform that brings Sarawakians together as one big family.

Upon arrival, the couple was welcomed by state leaders and dignitaries before enjoying a series of cultural performances. These included a lively lion dance, powerful drum performances, and traditional displays that reflected the deep-rooted heritage of the Chinese community in Sarawak. The event venue was filled with colour, energy, and a strong feeling of togetherness as people from different races celebrated side by side.

Tun Pehin Sri and Toh Puan also took time to mingle with the crowd, greeting visitors warmly regardless of race or background. Many attendees expressed pride in seeing Sarawak’s unity displayed so clearly in one place.

Visitor Joshua Amir Sibat said the large turnout showed how unity in Sarawak continues to grow stronger. He noted that the early crowd was proof that people value such celebrations and hope the tradition continues across generations. Another visitor, Azizah Alwi, described the celebration as a meaningful reunion, where old friends and families could reconnect while strengthening ties among different communities. She said Sarawak stands as an example of unity for the whole country.

Abang Mukhriz, who attended with his family, said the celebration gave people a chance to better understand and appreciate the traditions of other races. He hoped such events would continue for future generations.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian said the Chinese New Year, Hari Raya, and Gawai open houses reflect the Sarawak Government’s commitment to inclusiveness. He stressed that open houses in Sarawak are truly open to everyone, without the need for invitations, and this tradition strengthens harmony among the people.

He added that at a time when many parts of the world face division, Sarawak remains a strong example of how different communities can move forward together. Based on previous records, he expected about 5,000 visitors, with numbers likely to increase due to favourable weather.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, senior state officials, and department heads.

The celebration once again proved that in Sarawak, major festivals are not celebrated by one community alone. Instead, they are shared moments that strengthen unity, harmony, and the collective spirit that continues to drive the state’s stability and progress.
