SERIAN – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Serian Branch has stepped up enforcement with the launch of Ops Chinese New Year 2026, focusing on patrols and monitoring around Serian town.
During the 16 February operation, officers inspected 66 vehicles across various categories. They found several offences, including motorists driving without valid licences, probationary drivers who failed to display the required “P” sticker, and registration numbers that did not meet official standards. Technical violations involving vehicle conditions were also recorded.
JPJ said the operation forms part of a broader effort to improve road safety during the festive season, when traffic volume usually increases. By tightening checks on licences, insurance, and vehicle compliance, the department aims to reduce risks linked to unsafe driving.
A spokesperson for JPJ Serian said enforcement will continue throughout the year. Monitoring efforts will be strengthened to maintain safety standards. Motorists are reminded to keep their vehicles in good condition and ensure all documents remain valid before travelling.
The initiative reflects similar operations carried out across Sarawak, where JPJ focuses on roadworthiness, driver competency, and adherence to traffic laws during peak travel periods.
Residents in Serian welcomed the move, saying stricter inspections help curb reckless behaviour. Community leaders also urged drivers to take responsibility for their actions on the road, noting that enforcement works best with public cooperation.
JPJ Serian stressed that inspections will continue beyond festive seasons. Periodic operations will remain in place to ensure consistent compliance and protect all road users.
As families travel to celebrate, the department’s message is straightforward: safe journeys start with responsible driving and proper vehicle maintenance.
