JPJ Miri Seizes Vehicles in Ops TBC 2026 Road Safety Crackdown

MIRI – The Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan (JPJ) Miri Branch intensified enforcement efforts during Ops Tahun Baharu Cina (TBC) 2026, conducting patrols and monitoring activities across the city to enhance road safety throughout the festive season.

The operation, part of a nationwide campaign held from 9 to 22 February, aims to curb traffic offences commonly associated with road accidents. During the enforcement period, JPJ officers inspected 615 vehicles of various categories, including private cars and motorcycles.

Several offences were detected during the checks, such as driving without a valid licence, failing to wear seat belts, disobeying traffic signals, and vehicle technical violations. These fall under nine major offences identified by JPJ as key contributors to road accidents, including speeding, using mobile phones while driving, and misuse of emergency lanes.

As a result of the operation, two cars and one motorcycle were seized for operating without valid Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM) and without insurance coverage. JPJ emphasised that such enforcement measures are necessary to safeguard road users and ensure compliance with traffic regulations.

The operation in Miri was carried out simultaneously with similar enforcement actions in Kuching and Sibu, where JPJ Sarawak also intensified monitoring at bus terminals to ensure the safety of public transportation during the holiday rush.

JPJ Miri stressed that enforcement efforts will continue to be strengthened as part of its ongoing commitment to road safety. Motorists are reminded to ensure their driving documents are valid and their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling, particularly during festive seasons when traffic volume increases.

Authorities underscored that the initiative is not merely punitive but also educational in nature, aiming to raise awareness among drivers and passengers about the importance of adhering to traffic laws. Through a balanced approach of education and enforcement, JPJ hopes to reduce accident rates and promote safer journeys across Sarawak.

The operation reflects the department’s broader strategy of prioritising road safety for all users. With festive travel at its peak, JPJ’s proactive enforcement serves as a timely reminder that compliance with traffic regulations is essential to protecting lives and maintaining order on the roads.
