APM Sarikei Responds to Monkey Sighting in Residential Area

SARIKEI – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Sarikei was called into action on Friday morning after a monkey was spotted in a residential compound along Jalan Kimsan.

The Sarikei District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) received a call at 9.55am from Mr William, who reported the animal behind his home and raised concerns for the safety of his family. Responding swiftly, APM personnel arrived at the scene and began an operation to capture the monkey using specialised equipment.

The animal was located in the backyard but reacted aggressively when approached. Despite attempts to secure it, the monkey managed to escape into the nearby forest.

The operation concluded at 11.16am, with the team returning to PKOD headquarters at 11.43am. No injuries or property damage were reported, and the area was declared safe.

Wildlife encounters in Sarikei have become increasingly common in recent years. In 2025, authorities captured a giant crocodile in Sungai Nyelong after repeated sightings caused alarm among residents.

The Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) was involved in that operation, which ended weeks of concern for local fishermen and families living near the river.

Experts note that urban expansion and habitat loss have contributed to more frequent interactions between humans and wild animals. Monkeys, in particular, are known to wander into populated areas in search of food, often leading to tense situations.

While most encounters end without harm, aggressive behaviour can pose risks, especially when residents attempt to intervene without professional assistance.

The Sarikei Civil Defence Force has reminded the public to avoid direct contact with wild animals and to immediately alert the authorities if such incidents occur.

“Residents should not attempt to capture or chase away wildlife themselves, as this could lead to injury,” an officer explained, emphasising that trained personnel are equipped to handle these situations safely.

Community awareness remains vital in reducing risks. Authorities continue to encourage vigilance and prompt reporting, ensuring that emergency teams can respond quickly to safeguard both residents and animals.

The Jalan Kimsan incident serves as a reminder of the importance of professional intervention in wildlife encounters and highlights the ongoing role of APM in maintaining public safety across Sarikei.
