MIRI – Road safety officers from the Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) provided assistance to a stranded motorist in Miri during festive patrols linked to the ongoing Chinese New Year enforcement operation.
The incident occurred on Jalan Bendahara, where a vehicle broke down and disrupted traffic flow. JPJ personnel from the Miri branch quickly intervened, helping to regulate traffic while offering basic technical support to the driver. After several attempts, the vehicle was restarted, allowing the motorist to continue the journey safely.
The Chinese New Year road safety campaign, known as Ops TBC 2026, has seen JPJ teams deployed across Sarawak to monitor traffic conditions and enforce road regulations. These patrols are aimed at reducing accidents and ensuring smoother travel during the busy festive season, when traffic volumes typically rise.
JPJ Sarawak emphasised that its role extends beyond enforcement. Officers are expected to act as first responders in situations where road users encounter difficulties. The department highlighted that such interventions demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding public welfare and maintaining order on the roads.
A spokesperson noted, “This action reflects the continuous commitment of JPJ Sarawak in not only implementing the enforcement of road laws but also always being attentive and ready to help the community when needed.”
The department’s involvement in community service during festive operations is consistent with its broader mission of promoting road safety awareness. Similar initiatives have been carried out in previous years, including campaigns to educate drivers on safe practices, vehicle maintenance, and compliance with traffic laws.
Local authorities have also reminded motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on long journeys, particularly during festive periods. Breakdowns not only inconvenience drivers but also pose risks to other road users, especially on busy routes.
The assistance provided in Miri underscores JPJ Sarawak’s dual role of enforcement and community support. While the department continues to issue summonses for traffic violations, it also seeks to build trust with the public by offering help when emergencies arise.
As festive travel continues across Sarawak, JPJ has urged drivers to remain vigilant, adhere to speed limits, and prioritise safety. The department reaffirmed that its officers will remain on patrol throughout the holiday season to ensure that road users can travel with confidence.
