KOTA SAMARAHAN – The Ramadan Bazaar at Uptown Desa Ilmu officially opened on Sunday, 22 February 2026, with a ceremony organised by the Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS).
The event was officiated by Idris Buang, Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly and Assemblyman for N16 Muara Tuang. Prior to the ceremony, he conducted a walkabout session, greeting traders and visitors while inspecting the business atmosphere at the bazaar.
His presence was seen as a gesture of support for small and medium-sized entrepreneurs, particularly during the festive season when community-based trade flourishes.
The ceremony also included a donation handover session for members of the Uptown Desa Ilmu Association who were facing hardship. This initiative reflected concern for the welfare of the local community and underscored the council’s commitment to social responsibility.
Several dignitaries attended the event, including Municipal Chairman Kr. Haji Abang Ismawi bin Abang Ali, Deputy Resident of Samarahan Division Rais bin Ahmad, Asajaya District Officer Jerry bin Zainuddin, Deputy Chairman of MPKS Kr Daily anak Joseph, Municipal Secretary En. Gustian bin Haji Durani, representatives from the Samarahan District Office, IPD Kota Samarahan, and the Samarahan Division Health Office. Their presence added significance to the occasion, highlighting the collaborative effort between government bodies and local organisations.
The Ramadan Bazaar is expected to serve as a vital platform for traders to boost their income while offering a wide variety of iftar meals to the community. Organisers emphasised that the bazaar would operate in a safe, organised, and conducive environment, ensuring both traders and visitors enjoy a positive experience.
Ramadan bazaars across Sarawak have long been recognised as important cultural and economic events, providing opportunities for small businesses to thrive while fostering community spirit. Uptown Desa Ilmu’s bazaar is anticipated to attract large crowds, contributing to the vibrancy of Kota Samarahan during the holy month.
