Sarawak Mufti Datu Kipli Ends 16-Year Tenure Focused on Harmony

KUCHING – After more than a decade and a half guiding Sarawak’s fatwa institution, Datu Kipli Yassin is set to retire, marking the end of a tenure shaped by an emphasis on unity and respect among the state’s diverse communities.

His retirement, which takes effect tomorrow, concludes 16 years of service as Sarawak Mufti. Speaking after a courtesy visit to Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg at Kompleks Satria Pertiwi, he described the meeting as a meaningful gesture of appreciation from the state’s leadership.

“I will be retiring as the Sarawak Mufti effective tomorrow, and this courtesy call on the Sarawak Premier is deeply meaningful as a sign of appreciation for the trust and confidence that the state leadership has placed in my service all this while.

“I am truly indebted for the opportunity and the confidence given to me to lead the fatwa institution in particular and the broader Islamic institutions in Sarawak,” he said.

Throughout his tenure, Datu Kipli consistently highlighted the importance of safeguarding Sarawak’s social cohesion. He reiterated that while fatwa rulings are issued for Muslims, the institution must remain conscious of the sensitivities of non-Muslims to maintain the state’s longstanding harmony.

“Although a fatwa is specifically intended for Muslims, we remain mindful that what we issue should not hurt the feelings of those who are not Muslims, In that way, we can continue to live in harmony,” he said.

He credited the Sarawak Government for strengthening the fatwa institution’s structure and capabilities, enabling it to operate more systematically and inclusively. Over the years, the institution has adapted to technological advancements and expanded its engagement with the wider community.

Reflecting on his time in office, Datu Kipli said the experience had given him a deeper understanding of Sarawak’s multicultural landscape and Malaysia’s broader social dynamics. He noted that the state’s strong interfaith relations remain a model of cooperation and mutual respect.

He also expressed confidence that the institution will continue to thrive under new leadership. When asked about his successor, he confirmed that a candidate has already been identified, with the official announcement to be made by the Sarawak Government.

Datu Kipli’s departure marks a significant transition for the state’s religious administration. His leadership has been associated with a balanced approach that prioritised both religious guidance and the preservation of Sarawak’s unique social fabric.

As Sarawak prepares to welcome a new mufti, the emphasis on inclusivity and harmony is expected to remain central to the institution’s mission, reflecting the values that have long defined the state’s approach to religious affairs.
