KUCHING – Kuching South City Council (MBKS) received three sets of outdoor gym equipment sponsored by IJM Land, adding new facilities aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles in the city.
The handover ceremony took place at Kuching Park, where Tony Ling Thou Lung, Chief Executive Officer of IJM Land, presented the equipment to Wee Hong Seng, Mayor of Kuching South. Councillors, MBKS officers, and representatives from IJM Land attended the event, reflecting cooperation between the public and private sectors.
In his speech, Wee Hong Seng thanked the company for its contribution. He said the equipment might look simple, yet its value to the community runs deeper. Public facilities like these encourage residents to stay active and make better use of parks around the city.
The mayor also highlighted earlier support from IJM Land. In 2025, the company sponsored an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for Dewan Masyarakat and organised training sessions for council staff, strengthening emergency preparedness.
According to the mayor, the new outdoor gym equipment fits into MBKS’s wider plan to build a healthy, inclusive and liveable city. The effort connects with programmes under the Age-Friendly City agenda and the Child Friendly Cities Initiative. Accessible facilities support active ageing among senior citizens while giving children and families safe spaces for outdoor activities.
He also pointed out the growing importance of outdoor exercise for young people. With many children spending more time on digital devices, parks and recreational spaces support physical development and overall wellbeing. The gym equipment, he said, represents an investment in healthier habits, stronger families and more active neighbourhoods.
At the same time, the mayor urged residents to protect public facilities. Vandalism continues to affect shared spaces, and damaged equipment prevents others from using them. He encouraged the community to treat public amenities as shared assets.
Kuching Park has also seen gradual upgrades with smart city features. Among them are smart poles fitted with sensors that monitor air quality in real time, helping residents decide when conditions suit outdoor exercise.
The initiative forms part of MBKS’s wider effort to combine technology, environmental awareness and public health in urban planning. Wee Hong Seng said building a healthy city depends on cooperation between government, businesses and the community.
MBKS also thanked Tony Ling Thou Lung and IJM Land for their continued support in community development, strengthening the shared goal of creating a healthier and more active Kuching.
