KAPIT – Alexander Nanta Linggi, Malaysia’s Minister of Works, officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction and completion of ferry berthing facilities at Nanga Tulie along Batang Rajang in the Kapit Division.
The project, implemented by the Public Works Department Malaysia (JKR) Sarawak, carries a contract value of RM23.49 million. Construction runs for 18 months, from 3 September 2025 until 2 March 2027.
The design-and-build contract is handled by Rambungan Maju Sdn. Bhd., while consulting services are provided by Jurutera Adda Sdn. Bhd.
Work under the project includes the construction of two reinforced concrete ramps measuring 70 metres in length and 8 metres in width on both riverbanks.
Additional facilities include eight dolphin fenders, concrete approach roads, rest houses, toilets, solar-powered street lighting, and riverbank protection structures.
Once completed, the facilities will support a ferry capable of carrying up to 24 vehicles across the Rajang River in the Nanga Tulie area. The service is expected to benefit 33 longhouses located between Nanga Tulie and Merit.
The project will also improve access to nearby schools, including Sekolah Kebangsaan Nanga Encheremin and Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Pelagus, giving students and teachers safer and more reliable transport.
During the ceremony, Alexander Nanta Linggi said the project plays an important role in strengthening rural connectivity and supporting local economic growth.
The ferry facilities are expected to shorten travel time and improve mobility for communities living along the river.
Officials added the project forms part of the Sarawak government’s wider effort to strengthen infrastructure in rural regions.
Improved connectivity helps raise living standards while expanding access to education, services, and economic opportunities.
The development is expected to support regional growth and strengthen community wellbeing across the Kapit Division.
