SERIAN — A Khat Writing Art Workshop was held at the Darul Makmur Serian Mosque on 7 March 2026, as part of the World Quran Hour programme.
The workshop introduced participants to the fundamentals of Islamic calligraphy, giving them hands-on experience in khat writing.
Attendees had the opportunity to develop practical skills while deepening their appreciation for Islamic artistic heritage and fostering a closer connection to the Qur’an.
Organisers designed the programme to offer practical guidance on technique and discipline in khat writing. Beyond skill-building, the activity encouraged a love for the Quran and the beauty of traditional Islamic art.
Participants responded positively, expressing gratitude for the chance to gain new knowledge. Many highlighted the importance of such initiatives in preserving cultural art forms and passing them to younger generations.
The Sarawak State Library coordinated the workshop, noting that it reflects the library’s commitment to promoting cultural and religious literacy.
By combining education with artistic expression, the library aims to strengthen community engagement and appreciation of Islamic heritage.
Organisers expressed hope that similar workshops will continue in the future, keeping the art of khat alive and accessible.
They also highlighted the role of such programmes in nurturing unity and spiritual enrichment during Ramadan.
The workshop concluded with thanks to all participants, with organisers noting that the knowledge and skills gained will serve as lasting inspiration for continued learning.
