LAWAS – The Jom Masak Bubur Perpaduan (Let’s Cook Unity Porridge) programme brought festive cheer to Lawas on Saturday, with 1,500 packets of porridge distributed to the local community at the Lawas Fire and Rescue Station.
Organised by the Jalan Gaya Neighbourhood Association (KRT), the initiative was carried out in collaboration with the National Unity and National Integration Department (JPNIN), the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department. The programme aimed to foster unity and togetherness among residents while enlivening the Ramadan atmosphere.
The event saw members of government agencies working hand-in-hand with villagers to prepare porridge before distributing it to the public. The collective effort not only provided food but also strengthened bonds across the multi-racial community.
Organisers highlighted that the initiative was part of a wider programme implemented simultaneously in several locations across Sarawak. The goal was to encourage community participation in activities that promote harmony and inclusivity.
Beyond its symbolic value, the porridge distribution also reflected the culture of charity and sharing during Ramadan, ensuring that those in need were supported during the fasting month.
Among those present were Clarence D. Primus Tiandun, Chief of Lawas Fire and Rescue Station; Liong Tindan, Lawas District Police Chief; and Peridah Taer, Lawas District Unity Officer, as well as representatives from the Customs Department and the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS). Their attendance underscored the importance of cooperation between agencies and communities in strengthening social ties.
The Unity Porridge programme has become a meaningful tradition in Sarawak, combining cultural practices with welfare support. By bringing together diverse groups to cook and share food, the initiative continues to reinforce the values of compassion, solidarity, and mutual respect.
