KAPIT – The Civil Defence Force (APM) Kapit unit managed to destroy a ground wasp nest at Kampung Muhibbah Lot 1780 on Saturday (2026, March 7) after receiving a public emergency call.
A local resident who saw the nests outside his house first reported it to the Kapit District Operations Control Centre (PKOD). Immediately, four APM members from Charlie Squad were alerted to the scene.
Once on the scene, the officers identified the nest to be about the size of a football. Employing the Ridsect spray method, which is a technique using a specific insecticide to eliminate pests, the team was able to eradicate the threat in a swift and safe manner. The operation was conducted without incident, and the squad returned to PKOD after securing the area.
Ground wasps can indeed represent a risk to residents, especially when nests are close to homes. In some people, their stings can trigger a serious allergic reaction, making rapid treatment critical.
The public has been advised not to try destroying nests themselves, as improper handling can agitate the insects and cause injuries.
This is not the first such case, as similar reports have emerged from around Sarawak, with APM teams often summoned to clear wasp and hornet nests from houses, schools and public facilities.
All these operations serve as a reminder of the need for community vigilance and the preparedness of emergency services to act when aggressive insects present a danger.
The public in Kapit is advised to stay vigilant and report any wild animals or nests that may pose a threat outside their houses to the relevant authorities.
“The importance of reporting such cases in a timely manner to avoid harm is still emphasised by the Civil Defence Force,” said Yaseen.
In case of emergency, Kapit APM PKOD can be contacted through the hotline 084-796330 (24-hour service available) or call for national emergency 999.
