Sarawak Premier Explores Energy and Tech Cooperation with Canada

KUCHING – Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Abang Openg met Canada’s High Commissioner to Malaysia Jodi Rae Robinson, who was at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on Tuesday, to explore cooperation between both sides in relation to energy, technology and sustainable mining.

The courtesy visit reflected Sarawak’s aspiration to be a regional energy hub. With plentiful natural resources and the intention to sell energy to countries in the region, the Premier underscored that the state is keen to explore new partnerships.

High Commissioner Robinson noted Sarawak’s potential, adding that Canada believes there are opportunities to share its expertise in renewable energy and hydrogen research and carbon capture technologies.

They also discussed digitising Sarawak’s energy grid for more efficient assets. Both parties were in consensus that modernising infrastructure will enable more sustainable and reliable energy management, which is attuned with the global strategy towards clean energy systems.

The development of critical minerals and mining industries was another area of focus. The Premier reiterated Sarawak’s commitment to environmental sustainability, and Robinson pointed out Canada’s experience in sustainable mining practices. This common priority provides a path forward in responsible resource development.

Robinson commended Sarawak’s exploration of hydrogen energy, calling it a progressive undertaking that is aligned with the global obligation to clean energy. Canada’s expertise in hydrogen and carbon capture could lead to new areas of cooperation, especially in research and technology transfer, she added.

The meeting also discussed opportunities for collaboration in agriculture, aerospace and technological innovation, beyond energy. The enhanced cooperation in various sectors would not only strengthen their economic linkages but also open avenues for bilateral exchanges, the two sides noted.

In fact, Sarawak and Canada have a history of cooperation in areas such as water treatment, carbon technology research, energy grid development and telecommunications. The latest discussions build on that foundation and indicate the desire for more extensive strategic cooperation.

The Premier expressed optimism that such partnerships would benefit Sarawak’s economy and also lead to sustainable growth for both parties. Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy is focused on strengthening partnerships in the region, and the meeting will reaffirm Sarawak as a key opportunity province to lead clean energy and innovation.
