GeoTalk Series Launches in Kuching on Plant Conservation

KUCHING – The Sarawak Delta Geopark (SDGp) has launched its first GeoTalk Series for 2026, focusing on biodiversity and community-led conservation.

The event, titled “Beneath the Canopy: Understanding Plants and Community-Led Conservation in Sarawak Delta Geopark”, was officiated by His Excellency Datu Haji Hamden bin Haji Mohammad, Director of Forests Sarawak and Manager of SDGp.

Held at 56 Hotel in Kuching on 13 March, the programme marked the beginning of a knowledge-sharing platform designed to raise awareness of forest ecosystems, endemic plant diversity, and the role of communities in conservation efforts.

The initiative highlighted the strategic role of the Sarawak Forest Department (FDS) as the focal agency in managing and developing the geopark sustainably.

According to Datu Hamden, the GeoTalk provides a valuable space for officers and staff to understand biodiversity conservation through the geopark model, while reinforcing the importance of community-based sustainable development.

The series featured presentations from experts within the FDS. Madeline George Pau, Head of the Geopark Management Unit, spoke on biodiversity conservation through the SDGp approach.

Nur Safinas Jelani shared insights on monitoring Rafflesia populations within the geopark network, while Julia Sang discussed Begonia species in the SDGp area. Runi Sylvester Pungga presented on ex-situ conservation for rescued wild orchids.

These sessions underscored the importance of scientific research and monitoring in preserving Sarawak’s unique flora. The focus on Rafflesia, Begonia, and orchids reflected the rich diversity of plants found within the geopark, many of which are endemic and require careful management to ensure survival.

The GeoTalk Series aligns with UNESCO Global Geopark criteria, which emphasise education, conservation, community involvement, and inter-agency cooperation. By integrating these elements, the programme aims to strengthen forest resource management and foster greater literacy about geoparks among the public.

Community involvement was a central theme, with speakers highlighting how local participation is vital in sustaining conservation efforts. The geopark model encourages collaboration between government agencies, researchers, and residents, ensuring that conservation strategies are both practical and inclusive.

Through initiatives such as this, the FDS continues to reinforce its role as a strategic partner in the development of SDGp. The department hopes the geopark will serve as a model of education, conservation, and sustainable development, inspiring future generations to value and protect Sarawak’s natural heritage.

The event concluded with a call to expand awareness and strengthen cooperation across communities, institutions, and agencies, ensuring that the Sarawak Delta Geopark remains a living example of how biodiversity and human stewardship can coexist.
