BINTULU – A community clean-up took place this morning at the Kemunting Islamic Cemetery in Bintulu as residents prepared for the upcoming Syawal celebrations. The programme brought together volunteers and local leaders who worked side by side to tidy and maintain the cemetery grounds.
The initiative received support from the Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Islam Bintulu (LAKIB), which announced that future management of the Kemunting cemetery will be handled by the Bintulu Ummah Funeral Organisation (PPJUB). The arrangement aims to place cemetery management under a more organised system for the long term.
Alongside the cleanup effort, the People’s Service Centre of DUN Jepak contributed three lawn mowers to support regular maintenance. The equipment will assist volunteers and caretakers in keeping the cemetery grounds tidy, especially during festive periods when visits increase.
Local assemblyman for N67 Jepak, Iskandar Turkee, thanked residents for their strong participation and cooperation. He said programmes like this strengthen community ties while improving shared public spaces.
The effort reflects a wider commitment to community service and mutual responsibility. For many residents, caring for the cemetery carries deep cultural and spiritual meaning. Maintaining the site honours those who came before while ensuring the space remains respectful for future generations.
Participants also pointed to the value of working together. The involvement of community groups, leaders, and residents showed how cooperation helps address local needs and maintain public facilities.
With Syawal drawing near, the clean-up left the cemetery ready to welcome visitors. The programme also sets a positive example for future initiatives in Bintulu, highlighting how collaboration between organisations, local authorities, and residents supports the wellbeing of the wider community.
