MIRI – Road safety checks across Sarawak stepped up as the Road Transport Department began its annual Hari Raya Aidilfitri enforcement drive.
On 16 March 2026, JPJ Sarawak Director Tuan Norizan bin Jili visited the Miri Bus Terminal to observe inspections of public service vehicles. The visit focused on bus safety checks and compliance with transport regulations ahead of the festive travel rush.
The inspection formed part of Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri (HRA) 2026, a nationwide operation running from 13 to 29 March. Around 500 JPJ Sarawak officers now serve across the state, carrying out roadside monitoring, terminal inspections, and safety outreach.
Public buses received close attention during the visit. Officers checked vehicle condition before departure to ensure passenger transport remained safe during one of Malaysia’s busiest travel periods.
Norizan observed inspection procedures and spoke with travellers inside the terminal. He reminded drivers and passengers alike about road discipline and vehicle maintenance.
“Safety must stay a priority. Every bus must remain in proper condition before entering service,” he told travellers during the visit.
Tuan Yusuf bin Andan, Acting Head of the JPJ Miri Branch, joined the inspection. Leadership presence during the operation reflects strong focus on transport safety across Sarawak.
Authorities also identified 288 accident-prone locations across Malaysia. Enforcement teams now monitor those areas more closely. Officers target common dangerous behaviour such as speeding, ignoring traffic lights, and overtaking across double lines.
Alongside enforcement work, JPJ continues public awareness programmes. A road safety roadshow held in Kota Samarahan on the same day reminded motorists to inspect tyres, brakes, lights, and other vehicle components before long journeys.
Officials stressed one clear message: road law compliance protects lives during the Aidilfitri travel surge.
The operation also includes temporary restrictions on heavy vehicles along selected routes. Enforcement teams monitor nine major traffic offences throughout the campaign period.
Across Malaysia, close to 3,000 enforcement officers now take part in the initiative. In Sarawak, bus terminal inspections remain a key focus area. Major transport hubs such as Miri, Kuching Sentral, and Sibu receive regular checks to confirm express buses meet safety standards before departure.
Passengers at terminals welcomed the visible presence of JPJ officers. Regular inspections offer reassurance during the busy festive travel season.
As Aidilfitri approaches, JPJ Sarawak continues balancing enforcement work with community outreach. Authorities, transport operators, and passengers share responsibility for safer journeys on the road.
