JPJ Sarawak Intensifies Festive Patrols to Safeguard Road Users

KUCHING – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak has expanded its patrol and monitoring operations across the state during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri period, aiming to maintain orderly traffic flow and protect road users.

The initiative, carried out under Ops HRA 2026, targets areas identified as traffic hotspots, including major intercity routes, urban centres, and roads frequently flagged for congestion or accidents.

Officers from all JPJ branches in Sarawak have been deployed to strengthen enforcement and ensure compliance with road regulations.

According to JPJ Sarawak, the increased presence of personnel is intended to reassure the public and encourage responsible driving behaviour.

The department emphasised that its officers are not only monitoring traffic but also checking vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards.

This move comes as part of a wider safety campaign during the festive season. The department highlighted that the surge in vehicle numbers during Syawal celebrations often leads to higher accident risks.

By intensifying patrols, JPJ aims to reduce traffic offences and safeguard travellers returning to their hometowns or visiting relatives.

In addition to JPJ’s efforts, Sarawak police have also launched Op Selamat 26, mobilising 750 officers and personnel between 19 and 24 March.

Their duties include monitoring accident-prone routes, easing congestion, and ensuring residential areas remain secure while families travel.

Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah urged residents to inform authorities before leaving their homes to help prevent criminal incidents.

JPJ Sarawak reiterated its commitment to balancing enforcement with advocacy. The department continues to remind drivers of the importance of adhering to the Road Transport Act 1987 and related legislation.

Officers have been tasked with observing driver behaviour, checking licences, and ensuring commercial vehicles comply with safety requirements.

The Kuching branch, in particular, has been active in hotspot monitoring, with operations guided by accident data, enforcement records, and public feedback.

This data-driven approach allows JPJ to focus resources where they are most needed, ensuring maximum impact during peak travel periods.

The department stressed that its ultimate goal is to protect lives and reduce accidents. “Our responsibility is to ensure that every road user can travel safely and confidently during the festive season,” JPJ Sarawak stated.

With both JPJ and police working in tandem, Sarawak’s authorities hope to deliver a safer and more orderly festive travel experience for all residents.
