Sibu is seeing stepped-up road checks as Road Transport Department Malaysia continues its enforcement push for Hari Raya Aidilfitri travel.
On March 22, officers from JPJ Sarawak, through its Sibu branch, inspected 61 vehicles around Sibu. The operation uncovered several offences, including driving without a valid licence, expired road tax, missing insurance, and technical faults. Authorities confirmed that those involved faced action under current laws.
The Sibu operation is part of a wider effort across the state. JPJ Sarawak has deployed hundreds of officers during the festive period, pairing enforcement with awareness campaigns to keep roads safer. The goal goes beyond issuing fines, it’s about getting drivers to follow the rules and reducing risks.
Similar checks have taken place in Kuching, Miri, and Kota Samarahan. These include inspections of express buses and other public service vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards before carrying passengers. With travel volumes rising, these inspections play a key role.
At the national level, JPJ has added drone surveillance to track traffic offences. In the first few days alone, thousands of violations were recorded, such as dangerous overtaking, misuse of emergency lanes, and ignoring traffic signals. Those cases are now being processed for enforcement.
The department has also worked with local organisations and fuel stations to run safety campaigns. Drivers are being reminded to check their vehicles before long trips and keep all documents valid.
JPJ Sarawak’s message is clear. Stay alert, keep your licence and insurance up to date, and make sure your vehicle is in good condition. With heavier traffic during the festive season, safer roads depend on drivers taking responsibility.
