KUCHING – The construction of the elevated Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) guideway along Jalan Lapangan Terbang is making visible progress, with additional U-beam structures installed in recent weeks near Kampung Cemerlang.
This section of the project is gradually extending towards the future SR07 ART Station, also known as Pelita Height Station, located close to the Kenyalang flyover.
The ART system forms the backbone of the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS), a major initiative led by Sarawak Metro.
The project is designed to reduce traffic congestion in the city while supporting Sarawak’s ambition of becoming a high-income state by 2030.
The ART vehicles will be powered by hydrogen fuel cells, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional transport.
Recent developments along Jalan Lapangan Terbang highlight the steady pace of construction. The installation of U-beams and pier caps is a crucial step in forming the elevated guideway, which will eventually connect multiple ART stations across Greater Kuching.
Once completed, the system will provide seamless travel supported by feeder buses, ensuring first and last-mile connectivity for commuters.
Sarawak Metro has expressed appreciation for the public’s cooperation during the ongoing works. Motorists are advised to exercise caution when driving near construction zones, as heavy machinery and installation activities continue.
The company emphasised that patience from road users is vital as the state works towards delivering a modern, efficient transport system.
The ART project is not only about easing traffic but also about transforming Kuching’s urban mobility. By introducing hydrogen-powered vehicles, the system contributes to Sarawak’s broader decarbonisation goals.
The initiative is expected to set a benchmark for sustainable transport in Malaysia, positioning Kuching as a pioneer in adopting green technology for public transit.
The Pelita Height Station, once operational, will serve as a key hub within the ART network. Its strategic location near the Kenyalang flyover will enhance accessibility for residents and visitors, linking communities more effectively to the city centre.
The station is part of a wider plan that includes multiple elevated and at-grade stations across the metropolitan area.
As construction advances, Sarawak Metro reiterated its commitment to safety and efficiency. The company assured that every stage of development is being carried out with strict adherence to engineering standards, ensuring a reliable system for future commuters.
The ART guideway along Jalan Lapangan Terbang is a visible sign of Kuching’s transformation. With each new structure installed, the city moves closer to realising a modern transport network that promises convenience, sustainability, and economic growth for Greater Kuching.
