SRDC Collects 307kg of Used Cooking Oil in Durin Bazaar

SIBU – A community recycling initiative at Durin Bazaar on 28 March 2026 successfully collected 307 kilograms of used cooking oil, marking another step towards sustainable waste management in Sarawak.

The programme, organised by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), aims to encourage households and businesses to dispose of used cooking oil responsibly.

By collecting and recycling the oil, organisers hope to reduce environmental pollution and convert waste into valuable resources such as renewable energy and recycled products.

Officials highlighted that improper disposal of used cooking oil, such as pouring it into drains or rivers, can cause blockages, water contamination, and harm to aquatic life.

Recycling programmes like this not only prevent pollution but also contribute to the circular economy by turning waste into usable materials.

The campaign was well received by the local community, with residents bringing their used oil to the collection point despite the hot weather.

SRDC emphasised that such initiatives reflect the importance of making recycling a cultural practice, encouraging everyone to play their part in protecting the environment.

Globally, used cooking oil has been repurposed into biodiesel, soaps, and other industrial products, offering economic and environmental benefits.

Sarawak’s efforts to promote similar practices demonstrate the state’s commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management.

SRDC expressed appreciation to participants for their cooperation and urged more residents to join future programmes. The council reiterated that recycling is a noble practice and should be embraced as part of everyday life.

The Durin Bazaar collection drive is part of ongoing efforts across Sarawak to raise awareness about waste management and environmental protection.

Authorities hope that by instilling a culture of recycling, communities will contribute to a cleaner and healthier future.
