MUKAH – Specialist responders from the Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) were called into action on Monday, 30 March 2026, to eliminate a hazardous insect infestation that had established itself within a local structure.
The intervention followed a formal request for assistance from the police, who alerted the Mukah District Operations Control Centre (PKOD) regarding the presence of an active nest.
Such collaborations between law enforcement and civil defence are standard procedure in the region when biological hazards pose a potential risk to the public or government personnel.
Upon receiving the report, a team of trained APM members was dispatched to the specified location to conduct a risk assessment.
Detailed inspections revealed that an insect nest, described as being approximately the size of a tennis ball, had been constructed high up against the ceiling.
While the initial report categorised the insects as a swarm of flies, the physical structure and location of the nest required a tactical approach typically reserved for aggressive stinging insects.
Nests located in elevated positions like ceilings often present a challenge for removal, as they require responders to work at height while managing the risk of the insects dispersing into the surrounding environment.
To ensure the total eradication of the threat, the APM Mukah team employed a combination of chemical and thermal control methods. The operation involved the strategic use of Ridsect aerosol spray paired with controlled fire techniques.
This dual-action approach is frequently utilised by emergency teams to instantly neutralise the insects and ensure the structural integrity of the nest is completely compromised, preventing any potential for the swarm to return or rebuild.
The operation was concluded successfully without any reported injuries to the personnel involved or damage to the nearby property.
Following the destruction of the nest, the area was cleared of debris to ensure a safe environment for those occupying the building.
The Civil Defence Force in Sarawak often handles diverse calls ranging from flood monitoring to the removal of dangerous wildlife and pests.
Their motto, “APM Mukah, Nang Steady,” reflects the community’s trust in their consistent reliability when facing unpredictable local hazards.
Public safety officials remind the community that attempting to remove large insect nests without professional equipment can lead to severe stings or secondary accidents. Expert intervention ensures that the process is handled with the correct safety gear and disposal methods.
For any emergencies involving natural disasters or hazardous wildlife, residents are encouraged to contact the authorities immediately.
The APM Mukah operations centre remains available 24 hours a day. For urgent assistance, the public can reach the dedicated hotline at 084-872814.
