KUCHING – A total of 26 foreigners were detained during a two-day enforcement operation known as Ops Selera conducted around Kuching city.
The operation, led by the Immigration Enforcement Division of Kuching, was carried out from April 1 to April 2 with the involvement of 29 immigration officers. The move was part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on immigration offences and illegal activities, particularly in business premises operating within the city.
According to the Immigration Department, the operation focused mainly on food outlets, which were identified as key locations during the inspections. Officers conducted checks on workers and premises to ensure compliance with immigration regulations.
Preliminary investigations revealed that most of those detained were working without valid passes or permits. Such offences are in direct violation of Malaysia’s immigration laws, which require foreign workers to possess proper documentation and legal work authorisation.
Authorities also extended inspections to several premises in the Jalan Green area. These locations were believed to be gambling operations allegedly operating under the guise of food businesses. Enforcement officers conducted thorough checks to verify the nature of activities carried out at these premises.
The department stressed that strict action will continue to be taken against individuals and business operators who disregard immigration laws. Employers who hire undocumented workers may also face investigation and legal consequences under existing regulations.
Ops Selera reflects the government’s continued commitment to safeguarding public order and ensuring that businesses operate within the framework of the law. Enforcement operations such as this are conducted periodically to address complaints from the public and to deter illegal employment practices.
The Immigration Department reminded employers to verify the status of their foreign workers and ensure all necessary permits are valid and up to date. Members of the public are also encouraged to report suspected immigration offences to the authorities.
The department reaffirmed that enforcement efforts will remain consistent in Kuching and other parts of the state to protect legal workers, maintain fair business competition, and uphold national security.
