KUCHING – The Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has issued a strong reminder to residents to refrain from open burning activities as the current hot and dry weather increases the risk of fire outbreaks and deteriorating air quality.
The warning follows a bushfire incident reported on 4 April 2026 at Jalan Sultan Tengah, near Bangunan Sumber Alam in Petra Jaya.
The fire, which spread across approximately three hectares, was found to have been triggered by the burning of cable rubbers by irresponsible individuals.
DBKU emphasised that such actions pose serious threats to public safety and health. The haze generated from open burning can worsen air pollution, particularly during prolonged dry spells.
The mayor highlighted that activities such as burning rubbish or garden waste or clearing land through fire are strictly prohibited and may lead to legal consequences.
Under Section 113 of the Local Authorities Ordinance, 1996, offenders can face enforcement measures and strict penalties. DBKU confirmed that monitoring and enforcement will be intensified to prevent further incidents.
Residents are urged to adopt safer waste disposal practices, including using the garbage collection services provided by DBKU. The council also advised the public to remain vigilant in areas prone to fire hazards, such as grasslands and bush areas.
In addition, DBKU encouraged the community to reduce outdoor activities during periods of unhealthy air quality and to report any fire incidents immediately to the authorities.
“The cooperation of all parties is very important in ensuring that community safety and environmental sustainability are always maintained,” the statement read.
The recent fire incident has raised concerns about the impact of irresponsible burning on both the environment and public health.
With temperatures remaining high and rainfall scarce, the risk of fires spreading rapidly is significant. DBKU’s warning serves as a reminder that prevention is crucial in safeguarding Kuching’s residents and environment.
By working together, the council believes that the community can help reduce the risks associated with open burning and ensure that Kuching remains safe during this challenging weather period.
