KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has deployed its teams to carry out urgent clearing works on scupper drains at 3rd Mile and Stutong, as part of proactive measures to reduce the risk of flash floods.
Mayor of Kuching South, Dato Wee Hong Seng, said the operation was aimed at ensuring drainage systems remain clear and functional, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
He explained that scupper drains play a vital role in channelling excess rainwater efficiently, and any obstruction caused by rubbish, leaves, or silt could disrupt water flow and increase flood risks.
MBKS teams were on the ground removing accumulated debris and clearing clogged drains to restore smooth water passage.
These works form part of the council’s ongoing maintenance programme designed to safeguard public safety and minimise flooding in vulnerable areas.
Dato Wee highlighted that while MBKS continues to strengthen its maintenance efforts, public cooperation is equally important.
“We urge the community to play their part by not disposing of waste into drains. Keeping our environment clean is a shared responsibility and is key to preventing avoidable flooding,” he said.
The council has been stepping up its drainage maintenance operations in recent years, particularly in flood-prone zones across Kuching South.
These initiatives are aligned with MBKS’s broader commitment to building a resilient city capable of withstanding climate challenges.
Dato Wee added that MBKS remains committed to taking immediate action on the ground and continuously improving drainage conditions.
He stressed that the council’s long-term goal is to ensure Kuching South remains safe, clean, and prepared to face heavy rainfall without disruption to residents.
The operation at 3rd Mile and Stutong reflects MBKS’s proactive approach to urban management, combining infrastructure maintenance with community awareness to reduce flood risks.
By working hand-in-hand with the public, MBKS aims to create a safer and more sustainable environment for all.
