SAMARAHAN – The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) convened a meeting and dialogue session with hawkers at the Samarahan Bridge Hawker Centre on 21 April 2026.
The event brought together the MPKS Hawker Committee and members of the hawker community to discuss ongoing development projects and future plans for the centre.
The session was held to strengthen cooperation between the council and hawkers, ensuring that the centre continues to serve as a safe and conducive space for business and community interaction.
Among the key topics addressed was the renovation project at the Samarahan Bridge Hawker Centre, which is expected to be completed by the end of April 2026.
The works involve repairs and reorganisation of 60 registered hawker lots, aimed at improving both functionality and customer experience.
Another issue raised during the dialogue was the settlement of payment arrears by hawkers. MPKS representatives emphasised the importance of resolving outstanding matters to ensure smooth operations and fair management of the centre.
The council also introduced proposals for future improvements, including the adoption of a “green market” concept.
This initiative is intended to promote sustainability, cleanliness, and healthier practices within the hawker environment.
The dialogue session aligns with the Sarawak Government’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which prioritises sustainable growth and community well-being.
It also supports the MPKS Healthy City project, which focuses on creating cleaner and healthier urban spaces.
By integrating these aspirations into the hawker centre’s development, MPKS aims to provide a model for modern, environmentally conscious marketplaces.
Council officials highlighted that close collaboration with hawkers is essential to ensure the long-term success of the centre.
The hawker community plays a vital role in local economic activity, and their participation in shaping future plans reflects the council’s commitment to inclusivity and shared responsibility.
The Samarahan Bridge Hawker Centre has long been a focal point for residents and visitors, offering a variety of local food and goods.
With the planned renovations and sustainability initiatives, MPKS hopes to enhance its appeal while maintaining its cultural and social significance.
As the renovation project nears completion, the dialogue session served as a timely platform to address concerns, share updates, and reinforce the partnership between MPKS and the hawker community.
The council reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the centre evolves into a cleaner, safer, and more vibrant hub for all.
