KUCHING – The Public Works Department (JKR) Sarawak has formalised a five-year partnership with Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 22 April 2026.
The collaboration aims to strengthen research, talent development, and infrastructure delivery across the state.
The MoU was signed by Ir. Professor Lau Hieng Ho, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive Officer of Swinburne Sarawak, together with JKR Sarawak Director YBhg. Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. Dr. Cassidy anak Morris.
Both parties emphasised that the agreement reflects a shared commitment to advancing knowledge and building capacity in the construction and infrastructure sectors.
Key areas of cooperation include joint research projects, initiatives focused on ESG-driven (Environmental, Social, and Governance) infrastructure development, and opportunities for student placements.
The partnership also seeks to encourage knowledge sharing between academia and industry, ensuring that future engineers and professionals are equipped with practical skills and exposure to real-world challenges.
Dr Cassidy highlighted that the collaboration is part of JKR’s broader vision to modernise infrastructure delivery while fostering innovation.
He noted that partnerships with universities provide access to fresh ideas and research expertise, which can be applied to improve project outcomes and sustainability.
Professor Lau underscored the importance of industry-academic collaboration in preparing students for the demands of the workforce.
He explained that the MoU will create pathways for students to gain hands-on experience while also contributing to Sarawak’s infrastructure development agenda.
The initiative reflects Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to integrate education, research, and industry in pursuit of inclusive growth.
By combining technical expertise with academic research, JKR and Swinburne aim to deliver infrastructure projects that are not only efficient but also sustainable and socially responsible.
