KUCHING – The Oral Rabies Vaccination (ORV) and Mass Rabies Vaccination Programme were officially launched on 18 April 2026 at Unity Hall, RPR Batu Kawa.
The event was officiated by Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, who represented the Premier of Sarawak, underscoring the government’s strong commitment to eradicating rabies in the state.
During the launch, RM50,000 in support was announced to reinforce the programme’s implementation. Also present were Deputy Premier Dr Sim Kui Hian.
The initiative combines mass vaccination with oral rabies vaccination walkabouts, dog licensing, and microchipping, ensuring a comprehensive approach to rabies prevention.
High-risk areas such as Batu Kawa, Taman Malihah, and Desa Wira have been identified as pilot zones for the ORV programme.
This method is particularly effective in reaching dogs that are difficult to catch, thereby expanding coverage and improving the chances of achieving rabies-free status.
The Sarawak Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) highlighted that rabies control requires collective effort.
With strong backing from government agencies, NGOs, local councils, and the public, the programme is designed to strengthen community awareness and participation.
Officials emphasised that vaccination remains the most effective measure against rabies, a disease that continues to pose serious risks to both humans and animals.
By combining traditional vaccination drives with innovative oral methods, Sarawak aims to close gaps in coverage and protect vulnerable communities.
The initiative also reflects the state’s broader public health strategy, which prioritises collaboration and inclusivity.
Authorities believe that with sustained effort and community involvement, Sarawak can move closer to achieving its goal of becoming rabies-free.
