KUCHING – Sarawak’s culinary talent has earned international acclaim after securing multiple victories at the Global Chef Challenge Malaysia (GCCM) 2026, a competition that drew more than 200 entries from across the world.
The event marked a significant milestone for Kuching, which is recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Mayor of Kuching South, Dato Wee Hong Seng, described the achievement as a defining moment for the city and the state.
He noted that the success was the result of years of structured training, collaboration, and dedication within Sarawak’s culinary ecosystem.
“This is not just a victory. It reflects years of dedication, structured training, and strong collaboration across our culinary ecosystem,” said Dato Wee during a press conference.
He added that the recognition also comes with responsibility, urging Kuching to preserve its culinary heritage while continuing to innovate on the global stage.
Sarawakian chefs were not only competitors but also invited to serve on the international judging panel, a move that highlights growing respect for local expertise.
Among the standout performers was the Bee Gastronomy Group, which secured the Champion title in the BD1 Wedding Cake category and collected several medals across professional and youth divisions.
Other institutions and groups also contributed to Sarawak’s success, including Sampan House, The Sarawak Club, Kuching Skills College, Imperial Hotel Kuching, and UCSI University. Their participation underscored the breadth of talent across the region.
Individual chefs also made their mark, with Sarawak Laksa champion Own Cheng Xi and award-winning participants excelling in categories such as Asian noodles, banquet dishes, and global main courses.
Dato Wee reaffirmed the Kuching South City Council’s commitment to strengthening the city’s global gastronomy presence.
He stressed the importance of nurturing talent from students to professionals, building partnerships across industries, and promoting Sarawak’s culinary identity internationally.
“Our chefs are not only representing Sarawak’s culture, they are elevating it to international standards. This is what it means to be part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network of Gastronomy,” he said.
He further emphasised that Kuching’s vision is to be recognised not only for its food but as a global leader in gastronomy.
“This achievement is not the end of a journey. It is the beginning of something bigger. Kuching is ready to take its place on the world stage, not just as a participant, but as a leader,” he added.
The GCCM 2026 victories have reinforced Kuching’s reputation as a hub of culinary excellence, showcasing how Sarawak’s chefs are blending tradition with innovation to achieve international recognition.
