KUCHING – Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, on 23 April 2026, witnessed the presentation of a Malaysia Book of Records certificate to Wong Su Chung at the Premier’s Office, Kompleks Satria Pertiwi.
Wong was honoured for becoming the first Malaysian to complete the Antarctica Dual Expedition, a feat that combined two of the continent’s most demanding challenges.
At the age of 60, he successfully summited Mount Vinson, Antarctica’s highest peak, and skied 111 kilometres to reach the final degree of the South Pole. He was the only member of his expedition team to complete both challenges.
The recognition adds to Wong’s growing list of achievements. In May 2024, he became the first Sarawakian to reach the summit of Mount Everest, further cementing his reputation as one of Malaysia’s most accomplished adventurers.
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (Tourism) Sarawak, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, alongside senior officials.
The Premier congratulated Wong on his achievement, noting that his success reflects both personal determination and the spirit of Sarawak in striving for excellence.
Wong’s accomplishment is significant not only for Sarawak but also for Malaysia, as it highlights the country’s presence in global exploration records.
The Malaysia Book of Records recognition underscores the rarity of such an achievement, given the extreme conditions faced during Antarctic expeditions.
Officials present at the ceremony emphasised that Wong’s success serves as an inspiration for Malaysians, particularly the younger generation, to pursue ambitious goals and challenge themselves in diverse fields. His journey demonstrates resilience, discipline, and the courage to push beyond limits.
The Premier’s Office highlighted that Wong’s achievement contributes to Sarawak’s growing profile in international arenas, showcasing the state’s talent and determination across different disciplines.
