KUCHING – The Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division of the Kuching District Police Headquarters has stepped up its campaign against drunk driving through a targeted operation along Jalan Padungan. The enforcement exercise was conducted between 11.30pm on 22 April and 3.00am on 23 April 2026.
Led by a senior officer and supported by ten personnel, the operation involved roadside checks on 55 vehicles and 60 individuals.
Police confirmed that three drivers were subjected to preliminary alcohol screening using the SD2+ device, a tool designed to quickly detect alcohol levels before further legal action is considered.
One of the drivers, a 47-year-old local woman, tested positive for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities stressed that such findings highlight the ongoing risks posed by intoxicated driving and the importance of regular enforcement to deter offenders.
In addition to the alcohol-related case, officers issued 17 summonses under PDRM (K) 257 for a range of traffic violations.
These included offences such as failure to comply with road regulations and unsafe driving practices, which remain a concern for public safety.
The Royal Malaysian Police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying similar operations across Kuching and other parts of Sarawak.
Officials emphasised that the initiative is part of a broader effort to safeguard road users and reduce accident rates linked to alcohol consumption.
Drunk driving continues to be a major contributor to road accidents in Malaysia, with enforcement agencies working to balance preventive education and strict legal measures.
The use of screening devices such as the SD2+ has become a standard practice, enabling officers to identify offenders more efficiently during late-night patrols.
Community leaders and safety advocates have welcomed the move, noting that consistent enforcement sends a strong message to drivers about the consequences of irresponsible behaviour.
Road safety campaigns in Sarawak have increasingly focused on reducing fatalities and promoting responsible driving habits, particularly in urban centres such as Kuching, where traffic density is high.
The latest operation underscores the police’s determination to maintain vigilance and ensure that road safety remains a priority.
Authorities have urged the public to cooperate with enforcement efforts and to avoid driving under the influence, reminding motorists that such actions endanger not only themselves but also other road users.
