While private frequency allocations have been introduced before, this is the first time FRMCS has been applied to a public transport system in Malaysia.

The move underscores Sarawak Metro’s commitment to adopting future-ready technologies that enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency in operations.

The FRMCS standard, developed under the International Union of Railways (UIC), is intended to replace the existing GSM-R system used in many railway networks worldwide.

It offers higher capacity, improved resilience, and supports advanced applications such as real-time monitoring, automated signalling, and enhanced passenger communication services.

By securing the spectrum, Sarawak Metro positions itself at the forefront of technological innovation in Malaysia’s transport sector.

Sarawak Metro is currently spearheading the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) project, which aims to modernise urban mobility in Kuching and surrounding areas.

The integration of FRMCS into ART operations is expected to provide a robust communication backbone, ensuring seamless coordination between vehicles, stations, and control centres.

This will not only improve operational efficiency but also enhance passenger safety and service reliability.

Industry observers note that the adoption of FRMCS aligns with global trends in railway modernisation, where digitalisation and automation are becoming central to infrastructure planning.

Countries across Europe and Asia have begun transitioning to FRMCS, recognising its potential to support next-generation transport systems. Sarawak Metro’s early adoption places Malaysia among the pioneers in the region.

As Sarawak Metro continues to develop the ART system, the integration of FRMCS is expected to serve as a benchmark for future projects nationwide.

The initiative highlights the importance of investing in cutting-edge technology to ensure that public transport systems remain safe, efficient, and responsive to the needs of the people.
