MELAKA – A bus driver has once again triggered public concern after a viral incident showing alleged dangerous driving and an obscene gesture at road users in Kota Laksamana last Thursday. Police have confirmed they are now actively tracking the driver involved.
Melaka Tengah District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, said the case was reported by a 61-year-old man following a road incident believed to have occurred at about 11.38 am. The incident quickly spread on social media after a video surfaced showing aggressive behaviour on the road.
Based on initial investigations, the complainant was driving a Proton Persona from Plaza Mahkota heading towards Kota Laksamana when a bus allegedly cut into his lane near a bend close to Mahkota Medical Centre. The complainant’s car was forced into a dangerous position, nearly hitting a road cone.
The situation reportedly escalated when the same bus made a U-turn and again cut off the complainant’s vehicle at the Syed Abdul Aziz flyover. The car was said to have come very close to crashing into a wall during the second encounter.
After the incident, the complainant followed the bus and later stopped at the roadside in Kota Laksamana. The complainant’s son then approached the bus driver to seek clarification. However, the situation turned tense when the driver allegedly acted aggressively and attempted to confront him, leading to further provocation.
Police also confirmed that the bus driver is believed to have shown an obscene gesture during the incident, which further contributed to public outrage once the video went viral.
Authorities have classified the case under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for dangerous and reckless driving. Police are treating the matter seriously due to the risk posed to other road users.
Members of the public with relevant information have been urged to assist investigations by coming forward to the nearest police station.
Police have also reminded all drivers to remain calm on the road, avoid provocation, and always comply with traffic laws to prevent unnecessary incidents that could endanger lives.
This latest case marks the third viral bus-related incident reported in Melaka within a month, raising renewed concern over discipline among some commercial vehicle drivers. Previous cases included dangerous driving offences and other serious misconduct, all of which have already been brought to court and resulted in jail sentences and fines.
Authorities are expected to continue tightening enforcement against reckless driving behaviour to ensure public safety on Malaysian roads.
