MUKAH – The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) in Mukah successfully handled a potentially dangerous situation on 27 April 2026 after receiving an emergency call from residents reporting a snake in their backyard.
The reptile, identified as a black cobra measuring about one metre in length, was discovered near a home in Mukah.
Responding promptly, APM officers arrived at the scene and employed pinning techniques to secure the snake safely. The operation was completed without incident, and the area was declared safe shortly afterwards.
Officials confirmed that no injuries or property damage occurred during the intervention. The swift response ensured that the situation was contained before it could escalate, reflecting the importance of community vigilance and the readiness of emergency services in Sarawak.
Black cobras are among the more venomous snakes found in Malaysia, and their presence in residential areas can pose significant risks.
Wildlife experts note that cobras often venture into human settlements in search of food or shelter, particularly during seasonal changes.
Encounters such as these highlight the need for residents to remain cautious and to avoid attempting to handle snakes themselves.
APM Mukah expressed gratitude to the public for reporting the case quickly, stressing that early communication allows emergency teams to act effectively.
The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding communities and reminded residents of its 24-hour hotline for emergencies.
In its statement, APM Mukah reinforced its motto, “APM Mukah, Nang Steady”, alongside the reminder, “There’s a disaster; call APM.” These phrases underline the organisation’s readiness to respond to emergencies at any time.
The incident also serves as a reminder of Sarawak’s rich biodiversity and the challenges it can bring to urban and rural communities alike.
Authorities continue to encourage residents to remain alert, particularly in areas where wildlife is known to be active.
By working closely with emergency services, communities can ensure that such encounters are managed safely and efficiently.
Residents in Mukah and surrounding districts are urged to prioritise safety and to rely on professional assistance when dealing with wildlife.
The Civil Defence Force remains on standby to respond to emergencies, reinforcing its role as a key guardian of public safety in Sarawak.
